Hazel Dormouse

Muscardinus avellanarius

Nottinghamshire Mammals

Very distintive as is the only mouse sized animal with a bushy tail. Golden brown coloured fur on its back with a paler underside. Large eyes and long whiskers.

Recorded in the 1950s from a woodland in North Nottinghamshire. An introduction program was begun in the mid 1990s in another woodland. This introduction does not seem to have been succesful but more animals were released into the same woodland in 2013 and surveys have shown them to be breeding. A second introduction at another nearby woodland in 2014 has also recorded breeding.

The populations in both woodlands are closely monitored by members of the Nottinghamshire Dormouse Group
