Red Squirrel

Sciurus vulgaris

Nottinghamshire Mammals

Description

As its name suggests the fur is a uniformly dark red-brown colour but this can be very variable in hue. Much smaller than the Grey Squirrel and has prominent ear tufts from late summer and through the winter. Ear tufts can be absent or much thinner during the summer

The last Nottinghamshire record was from Mattersey in 1971. It was recorded in Wollaton Park until the end of the 1960s
