Weasel

Mustela nivalis

Nottinghamshire Mammals

Description

Can only be confused with the larger stoat. Both have a reddish/brown back and white undersides. Weasels are much large although size isn't always easy to judge when you seen one flash across the road in front of you. Key identification features of weasel is the lack of a black tail tip and the line dividing the brown back fur and white underside is wavy and irregular (straight and irregular on weasel). Other less obvious features include a proportionally shorter tail than weasel and slightly smaller ears.

Recorded throughout the county but is a very difficult species to observe for any length of time.
